I had the same problem. It might not be the starter. check all connections.
I rebuilt my starter then bought a used one and then discovered that it was
not my starter.( in fact I still have a similiar problem that has to do with
the connection directly above the solenoid.) I replaced the solenoid and
cleaned all contacts. bike ran again. yeah! old solenoid still good though.
strange.
