saw this post; I think its a good deal for a great bike. Offer $2500 with the idea of getting him down to $2900. Its more than a fair price, however psychologically he wants to to just drum up some cash before winter so you should be able to get a better deal here. Plus people don't have the extra cash in general to throw around towards something like a motorcycle. I'm willing to bet you can get him to drop $500; at that price you'd be silly not to! Anytime you buy a used bike you take a risk but this seems to be as low risk as you'll get.
