Given that many pants don't have any knee protection and the knee
guards in many riding pants aren't in the right place or stay in the
right place.
Because of this, many use knee guards that are worn directly on the
legs.

Some problems with that:

> Limited choices for the street. Lots of different motocross guards.

> Many are quite bulky and don't lend themselves well to wear under jeans or
> any other pants for that matter.

> Few are CE approved and while CE approval isn't necessary, it seems to be the
> only standard available for us to use to compare quality.

> Good knee guards are not cheap.

Now for the good part.
I took the knee armor out of my Icon ARC riding pants and tried it
under Mueller 426 Elastic Knee Supports. It seems to be working.
It's winter here and I haven't tried it riding yet, but wearing it
around the house for several hours has worked great. I don't even
notice I have it on.
I happened to use the XL support, but measure around your knee and the
armor and purchase a support based on that measurement.
A side benefit of the armor from my Icon pants is that the Velcro used
by Icon to hold them in place in their pants works to hold them in
place in the knee support. I'm not sure it is needed, but it would be
easy to add some Velcro to whatever armor you would use.

Cost:
-> Elastic knee supports - Less than $10 for two
-> CE approved knee armor - Came with my Icon pants, but you can buy a
pair for $20
-> Velcro, (If you decide it is needed) - $5 or less

Chances are, you can use several different styles/brands of knee
armor.
I can say that the Icon seems to fit quite good for me.

I think I can wear them under about any pants including Kevlar jeans
which is my intent.
