It was only 6.3 but it was nearly under the city and quite
shallow. I was on my motorcycle at the time and I pulled over
thinking I had a flat.
I got home to find that Park Terrace was badly damaged. So badly
that I begain a crash effort to get everything I cared about out of
there before they came and slapped the red ‘no access’ stickers on
the place. Once they’ve done that, there’s no access and they can
opt to pull ithe building down and none of your personal stuff will
ever get out. I stayed at it a day and a half up and down 6
flights of stairs carrying everything by hand. Then they closed
access. I got a lot but not all. 90% of my books are still in
there along with my element collection and all the furniture and
applicances. Computers, photos, clothes, stereo and tv all came
out. Your bedspread was saved. Not the wall hanging.
I’m staying at a friend’s house for a few days and I’ve discussed a
deal with Kathy and Bruce to take a bedroom at their second house
in Hoon Hay.
It’s too early to say what’s happening with my work. The entire
center of the city is sourrounded by police and military and the
area may stay closed for a long time. There’s a 26 story building
leaning and shifting and several that totally collapsed. We’re
still getting big aftershocks 48 hours later.l
I also understand Dennis currently has no internet access and does
not know when he will.
