Graham,
Good to hear from you! Yes, I was on my 85'700S when it hit. I
thought
I had a flat tire because it started acting so weird. But I couldn't
decide if it was the front or the real and that puzzled me. I really
had trouble keeping it upright as I slowed. But, when I stopped
and it
was still squirming, I worked out what was going on.
Where I was when it hit had minimal damage so I could tell how bad it
was until I was riding home and saw large lakes of water and sand
scattered all over in Hagley Park. Liquification, they call it.
My apartment block was still standing and looked normal until you
got up
close. Then I could see some real damage. Concrete support walls
shaken until the concrete had cracked and fallen away and left the
internal rebar exposed.
The second bike, an 86 700S. was down in the parking garage beneath
the
complex. It was laying on its side - having been tossed over. Handde
bar on the side has been bent up about 2 inches. Drivable but it
looks
odd.
I got the 2nd bike out and then began an epic two day effort to get my
personal stuff out because, unlike a lot of others at the complex who
were optimistic, I knew it was probabaly going to be condemed and once
that was done, we'd never get out stuff out.
Up and down six flights of stairs carrying stuff until they finally
flagged it as too damgerous and blocked entry.
I'm staying at a friend's place now and waiting to see what's next
with
my work which was in the CBD. The entire CBD is ringed with military
and police. Apparently, there's some severe damage down there
including two major buildings that just collapsed and a 26 story
hotel,
the Grand Chancellor, that is leaning and shifting.
Lots of after shocks. It's fours days now and we're still getting
really big ones that shake the entire house.
Feel free to share this with the Nighthawk group. Please ask that if
anyone wants ot write me - no enclosures <smile>, I'm on dialup here.

Hi Dennis, we got the word hear via David, via your wife that you
were on your bike when the earthquake hit and pulled over because you
thought you had a flat. We heard you got some stuff out of your
apt. What's the word on your other Nighthawk? Is it OK? Graham
