First ride for Mike..... Well, I had a Dad who had an Indian when he was younger and a railroad telegrapher in remote, rural California just after WW2. But in the late 1960's when I was 15 and my brother Jeff 13, we didn't really know that, and just wanted to dirt ride and I wanted some cheap street wheels. So we teamed up, bought a 'barely used' Suzuki 80 for a song from a motorcyclist dad who dirt-rode with his son and had bought the Suzuki for mom (who never played along...no cycling interest). We taught ourselves to ride on that, but quickly sold and purchased a used Honda SL175 that I rode for years. Jeff and I still ride, 43 years later. Jeff has a liter bike Yamaha FZ-1 (sports bike for geezers...) and a Kawasaki Vulcan 750. I have two near identical 1984 Honda Nighthawk CB-650SL. We keep two bikes each, so we can fly cross country and ride with each other (and he for sports/cruiser flexibility, and me for parts/maint). Recently, my son Josh joined our 'long distance motorcycle club'. Josh, another long flight away in Southern CA (vice Jeff's NoCalifornia and my Vienna VA) has a BMW and a Ninja 500.
Now I motorcycle commute spring-summer-fall (38 miles round trip daily) and do the occasional solo canyon carving out Middleburg and Blue Ridge way, or a few short tours each year (DE, Norfolk, PA). The Nighthawks have been very dependable (I really don't need the running parts bike, or at least haven't yet.....). During the winter, I don't lay them up, but just take them out on a mid-day, weekend day for short spins. Now in March in Vienna, northern Virginia, I sometimes do a short commute (4 miles to Metro and free MC parking...). By April should be back to full commute.
