Went out to check the chain and realized it's not only loose (~2" play), but the
label on the swing arm is already saying I'm just now in the "replace" phase and
I haven't tightened. Yikes!
Ok, so I've scanned through the backlogs of this list, and it seems like
everyone says get a good chain, but I have *no* idea how to compare manufacturers.
Just called CycleGear and they want $130 for the chain, and $40 each for the
sprockets, so almost $250 for the set after tax. (ouch!)
EBay has this set for $109.95:

And this set for $132:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/HONDA-CB750-Nighthawk-91-03-O-Ring-Chain-Sprocket-Kit-_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem35b17f162fQQitemZ230611162671QQptZMotorcyclesQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories
And this set for $139:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Chain-sprocket-kit-Honda-CB750-NIGHTHAWK-91-03-_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem41585a0b2aQQitemZ280655170346QQptZMotorcyclesQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories
I have no idea how to compare them. They are also stock. I was considering
going to a 16 T front sprocket described here:
http://www.pipeline.com/~randyo/16_Tooth_Sprocket_Mod.htm
And it *sounds* like I keep the rear at stock 38T and the chain stays at stock
525-110 even though the front sprocket goes up from stock 15T to 16T.
Question 1: Do I need a different size chain if I go with the 16T front
sprocket?
Question 2: Has anyone here done the 16T switch? I'm excited by the lower
highway RPMs, but I'm worried I'll lose acceleration and torque at the low
speeds, and I do a lot of curves here through the redwoods in 2nd and 3rd gear.
Any recommendations on if this is worth trying?
Question 2: How do I compare chains?
Question 3: Where have you bought chains & sprockets from recently that you
would recommend for high-quality, and quick shipping?
Question 4: How unsafe is it to ride the chain in the "replace" zone while I
wait for the new chain to arrive?
Thanks!
