Back in the 70's I changed engines in my 72 Datsun, think I did almost the 
whole 
job with a 12mm wrench.

I drive German cars. I need to carry 10, 12, 13, and 17mm wrenches. :p
But with those, I can do anything shy of swapping the head gasket on the side 
of 
the road. For that I need an 11mm Allen bit and a good strong 1/2" drive 
breaker 
bar.
