Eric some time ago I was also like that and actually I got Allen to do the washer mod to my bike while I watched because I was too afraid to screw something up. After he didn't I felt a bit stupid seen how simple it was. I think it is a good first exercise to start knowing your bike while doing something more complicated that changing the oil. Given the case that you get stuck there are plenty of people here that can guide you out of the tunnel.
