They can be single, twin, four or six cylinder engines - the singles and
some of the twins are two-cycle - the singles and some of the twins are
direct belt drive, you back up by reversing the engine timing and running it
backwards. The rest of the cars use a transmission with a reversible gear to
run the same speed forwards as backwards.
        That one pictured is mine - it is currently in pieces cause I spend
so much time on my motorcycle :-)
