I've read up on 'em some and concluded the only real advantage -- to justify 4X the cost -- is if they last 4X longer...something you can't really know without buying, installing and testing them.
The spark plug improvement thing, from fancy gap configurations and standard to platinum and now iridium tips, strikes me as similar to the marketing of razor blades. The old-school Gillette safety razor gave as close a shave as the latest whiz-bang multi-bladers. But each new "technological development" claims a revolutionary shaving experience.
