I don't know what your header config is, but I welded a VW resonator on each of four pipes rather than pay an exorbitant $200 for a set of new mufflers for mine, back in 1970. Plenty quiet and they were only $1.00 back then. There was an issue with the stock mufflers in those years: warranty was 6 mos. and they rusted out in much less than that. The local dealership right outside the Airbase gate became frustrated and began selling aftermarket exhausts instead, because at least they lasted lots longer. The fact is, the 450 had no such issue with its mufflers, which looked lots better than the 550 Four's did. Honda ignored that fact when I wrote a letter of complaint about the problem, merely explaining one should expect problems with corrosion in an atmosphere so close to the salt water. We were right on the beach. People couldn't believe that a VW resonator would quiet down such a noisy bike exhaust, like it was before I replaced the mufflers with them.
