I had a similar situation on my 84 650. I filled the reservoir and bled
the system twice before realizing / admitting what needed to be done.
I then rebuilt both the master and slave cylinders. Not that tough
once you have the parts and tools to do the job. The Clymer and folks in this
forum were very helpful, Kyle's walkthrough was especially helpful. Let me
know if you need mineral glass to fix the view glass. I can tell you where
to get it. I need to get another myself, looks like I have to redo my front
brake cylinder, its getting a little soft.
Oh and I second the comment about DOT 3 & 4 being practically the same
for our application.
And be careful handling it, if you spill some on your paint it will eat it
away like immediately.
My buddy was helping me bleed my clutch and when we were done I looked
around and asked him where he put the master cylinder cap and he said oh it's
right here on the headlight. Doh, I had to repaint the headlight housing. It
works as fast as paint thinner / stripper. Good Luck

I have a 85 650 Nighthawk.
Suddenly the clutch didn`t work anymore. I checked my clutch fluid
reservoire and it was emty. Unable to see through the level window.
The manual says I have to use dot 3 fluid, but its hard to find.
Is there another fluid I can use. Manual says mineral fluid, not
syntetic like dot 5.
What about dot 4.
