I have same problem. In the end it was fault in the starter. Try to start motorcyle and hold starter button for a second or two. It wil not crank, just click from the solenoid, but if the starter becomes hot then is the starter problem (not battery or solenoid). If you decide to clean solenoid be very careful to not disconect or pull those thin wires from it. If you do so, you can lost connection.

If the solenoid clicks then normally not. I suspect you dont have enough cranking amps on the battery to turn the starter. That is why you need to jump the starter from the battery to see if it spins the motor. If it does, you have enough battery to spin it. Thne I would clean the connections with some sand paper on the solenoid and try again. if that doesnt work, then it could be the solenoid. Also spray some electric parts cleaner into the starter button. the contacts are not always solid on these older bikes.

The battery in my 83 550cb NH is good. I just replaced the starter
motor which is good. Now when I press the starter button on the
right grip I hear one click only. The click is coming from under
the seat. Any suggestions? Needless to say I am not a mechanic.
