See http://www.snopes.com/autos/dream/jato.asp for the FALSE call.
Interesting, long repeated story, but apparently not true.

Back when I was in the Air Force I learned a story about this dude who bolted
two JATO rockets in the trunk of his car. He chose a long, straight stretch of
road and ignited the rockets.
Long story short: the rockets lasted longer than he expected and the speed
attained was greater than he expected.
he ran out of brakes ;he ran out of tire; at some point the car became airborne
because of the incredible speed and still kept going until the side of that
once "distant" mountain stopped the car in an instant.
What they were able to reason of the remains pulled from the mountainside is
that they had some of the steering wheel with some of his teeth in it.
I have seen JATO (incidentally that stands for jet assisted takeoff) rockets in
action on C-130s with a heavy load to be air - dropped at destination (usually
battle front) before landing somewhere close by. C-130s aren't made to land
with such a load, but they can take off, with and probably only with the assist.
Why am I mentioning this? 'CUse Kurt mentioned the rocket launchers which
reminded me of JATO takeoffs in 'Nam, and the fool who launched his car, not
thinking how much weight those little rockets lift off the ground attached to
the side of a C- 130 that couldn't take off without them, and would have to
jettison the load regardless, if they want to make a safe landing.
Each of the four turboprop engines, btw, put out 1,500HP.
So 3,000HP isn't enough to get it off the ground...
I wouldn't like to see one break loose, much less be hit by one...
But if you think about it, you'd be dead before you knew it. No pain.
Better'n falling on a grenade.
