My first career, I was a journeyman toolmaker. I know about metals. The gas tank can be repaired with holes. I would drain it, clean the tank with soapy water. Clean it again. Clean it again. Test it to make sure there are absolutely no fumes in it. Have it sandblasted. Inset the holes slightly so there is a little room for weld. Rinse it again. Take it to a professional welder. Professional welders know all the correct welding techniques. Then you can grind / sand it down smooth and bondo if needed.
