I was thinking another possibility is that a coil pack could be going bad and
failing when it gets hot. That's an easy check for resistance across the coil
terminals.

Subject: [Nighthawk Lovers] '96 Nighthawk starts, now won't run...

First of all, I'm a relatively new member to this forum, but I have enjoyed
all of the good information I have gleaned from the posts I have read so
far. The second thing is I purchased my 1996 Nighthawk about a month ago
with 36,900 miles on it, it currently has 37,606. Everything has been great
with the motorcycle. (Picture should be attached.)

Here is the problem: Out riding, drove about 5 miles down the freeway,
pulled off on the exit ramp, down to a stoplight and the bike died at the
light. It restarted, but the oil light came on. Had checked oil before I
started the ride and their is/was still plenty of oil according to the
dipstick. Oil light remained on, didn't travel more than 20 feet after
that, then turned the bike off. Fortunately a friend within 3 blocks, so I
pushed the bike their and stayed overnight until tow truck came the next
morning.

Had it towed cause I didn't want to cause more damage if it was a major
problem. (Quick interlude, this is when I found out that AAA Roadside
Assistance is basically no good for motorcycles. I signed up for AMA
Roadside Assistance!)

Next morning bike was towed to Honda Dealer, mechanic started bike and it
ran perfectly while at the shop. Found no problems, but thought there might
be too much oil and maybe I should use 91 octane. Started to ride the 6
blocks back to my house, but bike sputtered, then quit running about 1 1/2
blocks from my house.

Going to take bike back to dealer service tomorrow, just wondering if
anything I said previously regarding this "problem" can help any of you
point me in the right direction. And yes, I have downloaded a PDF of the
manual for this year Nighthhawk. :) Thanks in advance for any
comments/suggestions!
Michael

PS I'm fairly handy with tools, the only reason I'm taking to dealer
service is because I have only owned this bike for a month or so. Using the
visit to the dealer to have them give it the once over and check everything
out.
