Also the manual for the bike will tell you the bolt sizes.  I have the Honda 
service manual for my ST and it has lots of the details.  Kinda the minimum for 
working on a bike.  Happy wrenching.

Hank is right. One of the requirements of owning bikes this old is a good set 
of metric wrenches.

Sorry, but I don’t understand the need for your question.  Do you not have an 
assortment of wrench sizes?  If not, go get them as you will need them.  If you 
do, guess at a size and try one. Too small? Use a larger one. Too large? Use a 
smaller one.  I seldom look to see the socket number/size I need.  Of course, 
if you’re looking for an excuse to delay the job, this question is a good delay 
question.

I'm not sure which nighthawk you have. If it's an '85 650 then yes, removing 
the headlight makes it much easier, and it's only 2 bolts holding it on. If 
it's a 700 then no, you don't need to remove the headlight. If it's another 
model then I'm not sure.
