While you're reading up, pay attention to the cause of the cracks. Rubber is made up of compounds designed to flex. As rubber ages (and/ or is not flexed -- as in, stored and unused for long periods) it loses its ability to remain flexible.
The cracks are referred to as "dry rot." The rubber hardens and loses it ability to rebound from the stresses imposed in everyday operation. It is therefore susceptible to blowouts. The last thing you want on a motorcycle at speed is a blowout (!) So tread depth is not the only measure of the condition of a tire.
