i joey glad to hear u sorted out your problems you mentioned throttle
adjustment myh cable snapped recently and i replaced it but now i notice the
idle iks up on 2000 it was 1500 what should i do try and get it back to 1500 by
adjustin g the cables or should i just go straight for the idle screw and back
it off. throttle is snappy enough but ik do notice a different sound to the
engine in the idle like an unevenness on top of the steady idle if u know what

      Hello All,

Well guess what - ye olde (not so) Humble moderator should

really really take a good look at things before freaking completely out.

After $868 - apparently it was too much effort to hook up the

crank case breather hose to the airbox.

Yes ladies and gentlemen - that was the source of the burning

oil that the shop couldn't find.

Oh and the non-working fuel gauge? Well it helps when you hook

up the vacuum line to that as well. (Which as soon as I find where it goes,

I will)

And the geniuses couldn't find the problem with my tach either

- I did - I took the cable off when it no longer worked :-)

The biggest problem I can confirm so far is that the idle is

set way high - I think the mechanic was used to either weed whackers or 600

cc sportbikes (is there a difference?) or was totally tach dependent since

the idle is around 2000 rpm. Before anyone asks - yes - I adjusted the idle

screw on the carbs - its all the way down - I've got to pull the tank back

off and adjust the throttle adjustment - its not allowing the throttles to

close all the way.

Ironically - no choke needs to be used when it starts that

way.... but its unrideable at speeds under 15 MPH - won't idle down that

far.

            False alarm folks!

            -Joey

Great news. Good to hear your on the right track and your issues sound
minor.

Next issue, find a shop that knows what their doing for your next visit.

Or perhaps do your own work if that's the best Maine has to offer.

Ironically - after all this - I do feel that I was charged a fair amount

for what they did do to the bike - 4 carbs completely cleaned out and

rebuilt - the cost for the Rebuild kits is about $30/ each - and almost 4

hours of labor to disassemble, clean reassemble, sync and install. That was

the majority of the labor involved. I am disappointed that I am still

wrenching on it after I had it 'fixed' but frankly - it could have been a

lot worse.

She isn't perfect, but at 56,000 miles and 34 years old - if she'll keep

rolling - I'll keep riding her.

Good, now you know a shop to NOT take your bike back to. Glad to hear
you're back in the saddle. BTW, I'm not so sure the fuel gauge needs vacuum. I
would think it would just need wires, as all the ones I've seen were
essentially potentiometers (SP?).

      This is sorta "motorcycle related".

Half of the 2CV owners will shudder that he gutted a classic and left it in

the desert. The other half will nod in appreciation at the car's

flexibility. Either way, this story has the MacGyver theme stuck in my head.

My wife wears a modular. It's good for in town, because the chin guard
flips up, but you don't want to be going much over 35 because the wind grabs
it. Plus its protection is somewhat compromised.

I don't know if the wind above your windshield would grab the flipped shield of
the helmet or not.

I have a full face but here in La. it's the same with the heat, so I wear a 3/4
helmet myself, since I came home looking like I just dunked my whole head in a
bucket of water from a three or four mile ride in traffic. The windshield
prevents most of the wind from cooling, on my Shadow.

I would ride my 450 Nighthawk (no windshield), but I have neglected to get a
license for it; and mainly people show "respect"for it (the Shadow) because it
looks like a cop bike coming down the road. They're not as likely to pull out
in front of me from a side street.

I've seen some front ends nose-dive when they see the bike coming. That tells
me they intended probably not to stop...

Until they saw the bike?

Anyway I use the 3/4 helmet now that summer's here.

And I believe you're right about the helmet being more like 2/3, now that I'm
thinking of it. They call it 3/4 in the adds. Go figure...

went with a 2/3 helmet.. ok, its more like a half, but not a little skull
