Yamaha experimented with several offbeat models back then, I think probly trying to compete with Honda's inline fours without actually producing one. None were very memorable, though.
I had what was touted to be a Triumph clone Yamaha Special 650, one of only two bikes I've bought new of the many I've owned. Vertical twin, but that's where the similarity ended. Lackluster performance, rough ride, spoke wheels and spartan fit and finish. I kept it forever because it was tall, like you say (I'm a long-legged 6'2"), and it was a rugged, cheap commuter. Finally just wore it out and traded it for a deer rifle (!). I think Yamaha finally found its niche with dirt bikes and cruisers and quit trying to compete with Honda's engineering innovations.
