You've probly been spoiled by the air shocks on your previous
Goldwings. Stock shocks on production street bikes are generally
nothing to write home about, being a compromise design by the
manufacturer's engineers. Since they can't know who will buy the
bike, how it will be ridden, or how much weight it will typically
carry, their specs are best-guess.

That's why there's such a lucrative aftermarket for higher quality
"performance" shocks.

Which ones are good replacements? It's kinda like which windshield is
best. You read up, pays yer money and takes yer chances. Some name
brands I've heard of are: Progressive, Bilstein and Halon. Each will
have features/advantages, claims/counterclaims, etc. Ultimately, you
choose, based on what you learn from studying each.

Here's some general reading on types of shocks:

I run Progressive 412s on the rear of my NH750 because they offer
better damping and a less jarring ride. I'll eventually replace the
front springs from the same company to eliminate excessive dive on
braking. Did that based on recommendations from others in the group,
not because I know a lot about motorcycle suspensions. You can
expect to pay $250-300 for a pair of Progressive rears and about $80
for front springs. They are available from Progressive's site or a
number of aftermarket outfits (Dennis Kirk, Bike Bandit, etc.). They
offer air shocks, too but they're pricier.
