I don't know about the forums or the Harley dealerships around here (Winston-Salem, NC), but the local used shop that deals with a lot of Harleys has always been good and had nice folks around. They're also willing to work with you on price when dealing in cash. I think I got my Icon Field Armor boots for about $120 there.
I also work with several (at least 3) Harley riders and none of them are "angry bitter cantankerous individuals."
