The pressure from the excess oil was too much and blew the gasket(s) where
you found leak(s). you need to replace those gaskets to fix the leak(s). It
could have been worse!

Subject: [Nighthawk Lovers] 1979 B400t major oil leak

Hey I know this is for nighthawks but I thought you guys might be able to
shed some light onto what is wrong with my 79 hawk. It all started when I
foolishly added too much oil (about a quart and a half too much) after an
oil change and after riding it around for awhile when I parked the bike I
noticed I had a decent sized puddle of oil under my bike. I have already
taken out the excess oil and filled to the appropriate level, changed the O
ring and gasket on oil filter cover. Nothing has slowed the leak at all. The
drips of oil are coming off of the oil filter cover but I think they are
coming from above, drips are also falling on the pipe that connects the two
mufflers but I cannot see their source.

Any advice is appreciated,

Chris
