Oddly enough the HD forums had a thread recently where someone had asked what
to expect going from a Shadow to a Fatboy. Let's just say there were some
interesting posts...
It's clear to me that over in the HD forums there is a lot more BS going on.
One of the reasons I love this forum, no BS, and in general people are either
helpful, or quiet.

I'll post a few of them for entertainment value, note that I am removing names,
as I don't feel that would be appropriate...

Here's the source post:
i currently ride a 2009 honda shadow spirit,i been riding for about a year,i am
planning on getting a 2012 harley davidson fatboy lo by the end of this year
but anyway this saturday im going to a harley davidson demo day and plan to
ride as many bikes as i can, just wondering how it will feel going from a 750cc
to a 1690cc? im very stoked and cant wait,i am an everyday freeway commuter,
just wanted to hear your guys experiences from going from a 750 to a harley for
those of you that did this as well, just trying to see what im in for

And here are a few of the more colorful replies:

I had a lot of bikes over the years and had a 97 Shadow before selling it and
buying a 99 Heritage. I was kind of amazed at how much better the harley
handled compared to my Shadow. Better in the corners than you could believe.
Balance beyond compare. I learned why they do harley slow races. You can't do
that on a honda or other imports. I think you'll be pleasently surprised at
how well the harley feels to you.

I had a 1988 VT1100 Shadow and now I have a Heritage. Imagine going from a
Toyota Matrix to a Cadillac Escalade only the gas mileage didn't change.

I went from an 800cc Suzuki to a Low Rider. You will notice the extra weight
-- in a really good way. Wind will be far less your enemy. On my Suzuki, I
dreaded the freeway and would get blown out of line when wind gusts got to
30mph or so. Not with the H-D.The H-D handles turns better at all speeds. I
can do the MSF figure 8 on the Low Rider. Your sexual allure increases
exponentially when you ride a Harley-Davidson.

You will have no problem. Plus, you will also become more attractive to the
ladies. Chicks really dig Harleys lol.

Remember when you were a mere teenage boy dreaming about getting that first
girl(assuming you're a guy)? Put down the Jergens and grab a fistful of rubbers
because it's prom night!

My first (owned and street legal) bike was a Shadow 500. Moved up to CBR 600s,
short tour in the VFR world, and then back to a Shadow ACE 750. I was dumping
money into my "economical" cruiser in the forms of seats, windshields, etc,
etc, and knowing all the time I wanted a Harley. Had my mind set on a Fatboy
Lo for the look, the price, and the seat height. Unfortunately I made the
mistake of riding a Street Glide. As the move from a Shadow to a Harley, it's
night and day. The only time you will notice the weight is moving it without
power (backing up, quick move in the garage, etc). Under power it's such a
well balanced machine it's tranparent. When I sold my Shadow I offered to
drive it to the new owner and it was, well, like getting on a cheap moped after
riding the Harley. The brakes seemed horrible, everything about it seemed
cheap, I actually hesitated getting on the freeway thinking "this thing really
isn't up for this". Keep in mind my Shadow only had 12K on it, was very well
maintained, and was in perfect condition. The Harley is just so well put
together, they are in a whole different class...in a good way.

My two cents:

There were some good posts too, but this is just a sampling of the idiocy that
is out there. I am convinced that at least half the folks that ride HD are in a
delusional state. Being a recent HD purchaser and owner I can only say this, my
Fatboy is very fun to ride, I love it, but in the handling category, I will
drive circles around it on backroads. Now the interstate is different. I get my
Nighthawk up to about 85 or 90 and I'm done, where my Fatboy is lugging at 60
and will accelerate at ease well past 100.

Well Gene I put mine up against a 1200 sportster with a rider that was very
good. I didn't have to run all that hard to keep pace with him because the NH
was more agile, faster, and had better brakes. He had more power at low revs so
I just kept the RPMs up and could walk him whenever I wanted. The NH is a
better machine in any measurable attribute, add in low cost, and virtually no
maintenance requirements, they are hard to beat.
