When you hit "Reply" you're posting to the forum on the website and your message will appear there. Scroll a little, after sending and you'll see a note "Your post was successful" but you may not see the message on the site immediately (depends on traffic on the net).
If you hit "Reply to author" you send a private email to whomever you're responding to, that only you and that person will see. It will not appear on the forum.
