Greetings,
Still working to stop my oil leak.... I've got the valve cover off right now
and I have it at a friend's house getting polished. (about 20 more hours on
that project and pictures will be posted when complete). I think the leak is
patched via Marine Tex, RTV, and a hose clamp. (Not ideal, but I think it'll
work)
My questions:
1. What should I check while the cover is off?
I mic'd the cam on all visible lobes and read timing chain droop (7mm
iirc). I couldn't find a spec for chain stretch that is measured on the bike.
The manual only specs chain length when removed from the engine.
2. Can I run the engine with the valve cover off?
I'd like to run it to see if the leak is sealed before I replace the
valve cover to save a $20 gasket. Not sure if the chain guide on the inside of
the valve cover makes that much of a difference for basic testing; or if it
will try to jump timing on me :(
3. anything else I should look for?
Just FYI - If you remove the oil pipe bolts inside the head (#13 here) - they
aren't made any more and are hard to find. It looks like I got the last set in
the milwaukee area... The o-rings are still on-order...
