I found out about this group via a thread on the Nighthawk Forums, and
thought I would join - the more resources I have, the better!

Last March I bought an '82 750 Nighthawk, and it's been an experience
to say the least. The PO was a tinkerer, and tinker he did. His
story was that he had a terminal form of Cancer, and needed to sell
his possessions for treatment.

This is what it looked like when I bought it, and why I fell in love
with it -

This motorcycle is only 2 years younger than I am. I loved the look
of motorcycles as a child, as an adult not so much. There's too much
plastics used for my taste. I miss the days of chrome.

The bike was a real bear to start, but it would start and run. It was
recommended that I do a pine sol soak to the carbs, which I did. I
was blown away by the amount of grime that stuff removed.

Then my negative battery terminal broke, which began a chain reaction
of electrical shorts. I modified my main fuse to accept blade fuses,
but didn't get any farther. I'm still in college (but graduating this
week!), so my time has been concentrated towards that.

I almost had a stroke when I essentially got all of my plastics (cowl,
side covers) stolen from me. A guy on the forums said he would make
molds so we all could make new parts cheaper and I sent him mine as
donors for the project. A month later he sent us a message that a
friend was killed in front of him, bla bla bla. I haven't heard a
word since. I was able to find some deals on eBay and get new parts.
I guess sometimes you've got to learn the hard way I suppose.

As a birthday/Christmas present to me, my dad asked one of my uncles
(who are mechanical geniuses) to fix up my bike for me, and one of
them did. He replaced the ignition switch, completely rewired the
lighting circuits (the cause of the shorts) and installed some OEM
crash bars I found on eBay. He also rebuilt the master cylinder.
Currently he's painting the tank and the plastics for me before it
gets too cold around here.

With some carb tuning, and new tires I'll be completely ready for next
season.

I'm located in south central Indiana. If anyone is close to my
proximity, maybe we can ride sometime?
