It's not too difficult to rebuild a starter. There are instructions in a Clymer Manual.

The only thing that was really worn on mine were the "Brushes" I didn't need everything in the kit, but changed a lot of the items since the starter was already disassembled. The brushes were spring loaded to keep contact on the armature. I used twist-ties to hold them in place during reassembly.
