I don't know how a lifter for a NH is built but in cars it is simply a cup and
piston with a spring all held together with a c clip. The only thing to break
is the spring. Oil pressure does the real work. Most likely if they are
clacking it is because it is clogged, try soaking them in kerosine using a dowl
to work the piston.

Subject: [Nighthawk Lovers] Lifter help, please.

84 700SC, project bike (read as basket case- it came home in boxes) I
picked up last fall. My son the bike mechanic and I have been playing with
it in our spare time over the winter and almost have it ready to go.
He rebuilt the carbs for me and put two new tires, new starter, etc. on it,
I repainted it a generic color until I figure out what I want it to look
like and have been fixing the little things like lights and wiring. Put a
new battery in it and it starts. Smoked like hell for the first few
minutes, but it also hadn't been started for about 6 years, so the rings
needed to reseat themselves.
The main problem is lifter rattle. The exhaust valve lifters are loud. My
question is, what can I try before spending a bunch of money on new lifters
to quiet them down without damaging the engine? I know nothing about
hydraulic lifters other than they're supposed to be low maintenance, in
that they are self adjusting. We pulled them out and purged them as per the
manual, but it didn't seem to help much. Since it sat for so long (previous
owner was deployed overseas), have the lifters just died?

Tim
