I was reminded this morning of some sage advice I once received on the
list. With riding season spinning up I thought I would once again pass this
on:

We all know the risks of street riding. So do the rescue squads that all to
often have to play a critical role in saving our lives. More often than not
and especially when riding in rural areas, a helicopter will be called out
to bring a downed rider to a trauma facility. While this is an excellent
protocol to make the 'magic hour' it can also be quite expensive - $10,000
to $20,000.

Often these costs are NOT covered by your medical insurance policy. I
suggest you check your policy and inquire if it's not clear. If you
determine that air ambulance is not covered, look for some way to get that
coverage.

Fortunately for me, someone made a post similar to this a few years before
my close encounter with a BDC and I had added "Medical Payments" coverage
to my motorcycle policy and had my flight covered. This option only added a
small percentage to my premium.

Safe riding!

Not if your policy is in NJ.
It is expected that your health insurance will cover it here.

I have Progressive and had to add Medical Payments to cover the gap in
my primary health care.

I looked at progressive after my hit-n-run on the Betsy Ross Bridge back in
2008.
Yes, they cover more gear than State Farm (Namely 100% of riding gear, vs
helmet and gloves) for nearly double the cost of the policy, but no
personal injury coverage or medical payments.
And as far as I know they have not changed.

Each individual needs to evaluate their insurance options based upon their
needs and tolerance for risk. The policies and associated premiums offered
by each of the major carriers vary from state to state.

The key point is many folks aren't aware that they are not covered for what
could be a significant expense in even a non life threatening accident,
which was my experience.

In answering Vic's question I should have specified that my Progressive
policy is in New York.

Medical payments is a policy option that costs me about $50 / year.

Mike,

Great post on an important topic.

It might be worth exploring a policy that would also cover you in a
non-motorcycle related event. Not long ago I heard about someone facing
this expense without coverage, but this was a hiker who'd broken an ankle
in the mountains and had to be airlifted out. As someone who does a fair
amount of outdoor activities, that certainly made me think about it. I
haven't looked into it yet, but I'll try and do so.
