Not sure why you're considering replacing the ignition.  If the
current one worked before your nephew lost the key, it should still.

The reason for removing the ignition assembly from the bike is simply
to read the key code stamped into the housing (and maybe take it to
the dealer with you when you have the replacement key made to make
sure the new key works).
