Use some light oil(Seafoam, MMO, etc.) on the carb boots and let it soak in, 
that seems to help soften the rubber, I use ratchet straps to help pull the 
carbs back in the boots, and to get the airbox back on, a small pry bar also 
helps.

Thanks for the responses guys.  I really appreciate the consensus.  I
just wanted to make absolutely sure that I needed to pull the carbs
(which I really didn't want to do).

I'm sure the last time was a real bear simply because it had been so
long since they had been removed - so this time shouldn't be as hard.

When my uncle painted the bike, he sprayed the hell out of the tank -
including the petcock & I noticed some inside the tank.  My theory is
that the paint that got in the tank has dissolved in the gas and is
now in the carbs, which is what's clogging them up.
