when I went to training to ride the motorcycle ambulance, they taught us to leave the bike in gear at lights and look in the mirror until a car stopped behind you, then you can relax. ive never even had a close call in the 30 something years since then following that advice. as fdar as using the rear view when you are moving, if you aren't doing that, you deserve what you get. that's just common sense.

I think the best you can do is try to follow this rider approach. Never stay in the center lane, in particular if the car in front of you had a quick stop. Even if you see the car behind you coming too fast on your mirror, it might be difficult to react in time.
