BTW, I found a possible solution to something that has bother me for a
while: how to get turn by turn directions out of a custom made google maps
route on my phone. This is taken from another forum, and so far is the only
solution I have seen. I don't know how well it works, but I will give it a
try once the rain clears up. One needs to buy an app, but it looks like it
should work the same if one uses a GPS that accepts external .gpx files.

--------------------
YO, YO, YO PEOPLE!!! LISTEN UP!!! Some genius has done it!!!! It's a
really cheap app called Waypointer (links at bottom of my post) that works
in conjunction with good old android Google maps/navigation, which is free
of course. You will also need to use Firefox browser on your PC to make
the route on google Maps.

I just did it (made custom route, stuck it on my phone) and jumped in the
car to test it out, and it worked! I really look forward to using it on
the motorcycle... it's midnight so I will wait for tomorrow. I have
nothing to do with this app. I'm just happy I found it. There is a trial
version that is free for 60 days. Then the paid app is $1.29. I can't
believe how much other people are charging for android GPS apps that still
really don't have this ability.

A couple of things:

It is not a highly polished or elegant process to create/import/run the
custom route. In other words, it isn't automated. But it is pretty simple
for anyone with very very basic computer skills. Check out the youtube
link below. It goes like this...

1. create a special browser "bookmark" in your firefox browser from this
site http://www.elsewhere.org/journal/gmaptogpx/ (it's not really a
bookmark, its a javascript function)
2. create your route on your PC, with google maps, by right clicking
"directions from here""directions to here""add a destination"(repeatedly)
until you have your finished route
3. click that special "bookmark" which will create .gpx file code in your
browser window
4. copy and paste that code from the browser window into a blank text file
5. save it with a .gpx suffix
6. stick that .gpx file on your phone
7. open the Waypointer app, touch the "Open File" button, and select your
.gpx file
8. hit the big green button in the middle of screen (or hit the "Map"
button to preview your route and then start navigating from the map preview
screen)

PROFIT!!!

Like I said it's not a super-simple automated process. But it is not bad.

While navigating you will hear "you will be at your destination in one
quarter of a mile" as you approach every one of your "destinations". So
you might think that it will stop navigating, like I did. But it doesn't
stop navigating. There is a brief pop-up toast when you get to each
"destination" (I couldn't read it...I was driving) and google navigation
just keeps on trucking to the next "destination"... and then the next
one...

Oh man, this is great. I have wanted to ditch my ancient Garmin GPS V
(which really is lousy). And I really have wanted to ditch their horrible
MapSource software (which I have to run with horrible Windows in a virtual
box... but I digress). But I haven't found anything else that really
allowed the creation of custom routes then navigated me turn-by-turn as I
rode (without spending several hundreds of dollars for newer Garmin stuff).
So, I have just kept dealing with the awfulness of it all. I was even
prepared to try one of those expensive GPS android apps. Ha! I'm gonna
spend $1.29! I love open source computing.

Thanks google.
Thanks Waypointer dude!!!

Spread the word, there are so many android users looking for this!
