Hi, first of all, welcome to the group.
I might not be the best person to answer this question, and I am sure there
will be more appropriate answers, but let me just say that you are right on
the fact that if you want to lower the bike, one option if the lower the
forks. However, let me say too, BE CAREFULL! this is not a common practice
and requires some thinking and knowledge. Is not difficult to do at all,
and I believe it does not require to take the front wheel off. What you
need to be careful is with how much you lower the forks. Lowering the front
of the bike can dramatically affect its geometry and handeling, so it
really need to be done by someone that knows what is doing. It is more
common to try to lower the back of the bike, by replacing the rear shocks
with shorter ones. This is not difficult at all, but you need to make sure
you know which size you have to go with too.

Is the bike way too tall for you? how much do you think you need to lower
it to be confortable on it and reach the ground? how tall are you?
