On sport bikes you have no other option, and on my cbr lowering the pegs made a huge difference, both in long hauls and even riding in the city, where you have so many stop that you are constantly working with your legs. I have highway pegs on my NH, bolted on the crash bars. They are small and hardly noticeable, but very convenient on long trips.
