The stock plenum (airbox) setup for 4-carbs is more efficient and less
maintenance intensive because it's designed to collect and supply steady
volume and air flow to each carb regardless of the carb's mounted position
on the engine.

Pods, because each is located in a different position relative to the
airstream when the bike is in motion, are unable to match the same
performance. They also make for fiddly carb synchronization, so are a
major pain in the butt to keep adjusted.

Unless you are going all out with a radical reject of the carbs, K&N seems
to flow too much air to the Nighthawks. A reasonable alternative is a UNI
filter (permanent, cleanable, more compatible and cheaper then K&N).
