A thought: Think vertically. Used to carry my pool cues to tournaments in homemade scabbards made from PVC pipe bungied to the side of the bike. Screw-in cleanout plugs glued to both ends kept them weatherproof. Felt glued to the inside kept them sratch free. Rifles and shotgun could then travel standing on their butts -- providing the pipe is large enough diameter to accommodate the stocks.
