All,
A while back I posted that a film company called 'Second Society' had
requested help via Kickstarter to produce DVDs of a film they shot called
'The Bonneville Project' about a group of guys who run motorcycles at the
Bonneville Salt Flats Speed week.
I jumped into the project and I will receive a DVD of the movie for my
sponsorship - along with a DVD of the last film they put out 'American
Cafe' about building Cafe Racer style motorcycles. One of those bikes is a
Nighthawk!
Just to make it relevant to the NH list - I spotted two NH's in the
Bonneville Project, one was a Red 700s the other a 650 I think, but that
was in a shot where they talk about 'when we opened the shop' so a 80s bike
would have been newish then.
Back to the film - Although they hadn't thought about it until
halfway through the Kickstarter funding cycle - Second Society decided to
release a digital version free to those who bought the DVD via Kickstarter
or available for rent or buy via Vimeo.com -
http://vimeo.com/ondemand/thebonnevilleproject/74831974 - I'm seeing this
as a win-win - I get to help make the DVDs happen, I got a digital download
of the film before the DVD is released and I can watch it anywhere via
Vimeo streaming. For those that didn't get in on the Kickstarter deal - a
24 hour rental is $2.99 and a purchase is $9.99.
Let me be frank - I have not heard a lot about motorcycles on the
salt - except for the film version of Burt Monro's story (The Worlds
Fastest Indian) the extent of my SpeedWeek familiarity is from issues of
Hot Rod and Rod and Custom magazine from my middle school days. Obviously,
they talk more about the four wheeled stuff than the motorcycles. As a
result, I went into this with my eyes open. For those that don't already
know, the classes of vehicles and variations on those vehicles reads like a
small telephone book - there are classes for everything from vehicles that
appear literally stock (externally) and all the way up to vehicles that
have very little resemblance to anything that was produced in a factory.
The classes vary not only by external modification but by displacement,
normal vs. forced aspiration, type of fuel used, etc etc.
This story is about one bunch of guys, one of many I'm sure, that
traveled from Wisconsin to Bonneville after spending months and months
perfecting their bikes. Its an incredible amount of work - including a lot
of work while they are there (Can't say much more than that, spoilers!) its
a team effort, backed by family support.
If you like motorcycles that go fast - if you like speed records
- if you like seeing a bunch of guys who started as back yard wrenches go
really really fast - you'll find something you like in this movie.
I liked it - I'll probably watch it again - and I'm going to make
sure that at least a couple of my friends and close relatives watch it.
