No, you can't add springs to oem shocks. The shock is gone. I replaced my 93 NH 750 spring and shocks with Progressive from Amazon for $145 for same shock at their 412 and black HD springs (I'm 260 lbs) for $67. So for $212 including CA tax and shipping (free), I got deluxe springs and shocks: no more rack grind and it feels like riding on air now - real nice. You can't get most shocks for like a BMW for 300% or more of that.
To put on or take off spring, get 3 ties with the metal claws. Mine are old 1" or 1-1/2" ties that held down new BMW's in the crate dealers gave to me (they are very handy for hauling bike). Tighten down 3 and it will be enough to easily remove or replace the spring retainer piece. If you don't have that, NAPA has a strut spring retainer for $23, but you need the tie straps for hauling your bike anyway.
