Mark, Welcome to the group, and congrats on buying an excellent bike and finding an excellent support group for that bike. All of that said however, you may not find much help here for the mods you're trying to do, most of us are resistant to hacking up these bikes. Your mechanic is correct that the factory airbox is part of your intake system and pod filters will affect the mixture. Also, and this is just my personal opinion, but I love the rectangular headlight and the "back to the future" instrument panel on the 83-85 650, that's a huge part of that bike's character and the last thing I would want to change.
