Since there are only two studs per pipe, I just tighten them incrementally.

OK, here is what Cummings Diesel head torque pattern called outside in 
crisscross pattern (except I'd start at the top and only 8 bolts).

If no one has a more definitive answer, this is what I'm going with. My 
exhaust pipe nuts in the cylinder head were very loose (???), so I need to 
keep an eye on this. But that could be 20 years without retorqueing. So 
I'll do an outside-in top-down crisscross pattern :-)  180-in-lbs
