Does he carry a full set of clubs?  Might consider lightening the load by 
leaving some rarely used ones at home.  Used to frequent a 3-hole practice 
course, using a so-called "Saturday bag" (smaller, lightweight soft bag) 
with just the clubs I planned to practice with (3,5, 9, wedge, putter and 
driver).  Worked out pretty well.
