I think mostly the charging rotor or the regulator is what goes up. Check and
clean all your connections and grounds. High resistance and poor grounding is
what kills the regulator.

 Thanks for the link Allen.
I'm going to try to charge the battery that came with the bike to see if it'll
hold any juice. It looks like new.
Is there anything in particular that always goes bad with the charging system?
Are there upgrades that can be made?

Yeah Kyle, if it wasn't for your Clymer review on Amazon I wouldn't have ever
found this group!

It's nice to have an original 650 that looks like the picture on the manual.
When I bought the 550, the previous owner did some weird stuff to it that I
wasn't aware of. I wasn't as familiar with the breed at the time. You couldn't
tell it was a NH at 1st glance.

Wow, you got a great deal. I know I've seen the wiring diagram (colorized) on
the list, you should be able to find that with a search in the archives. Be
careful of Clymer though, I wasted several hours in my 650 because Clymer LIES.

Hi Gang,

It's barely been 8-mos since selling the 550. I wasn't planning on buying a
motorcycle today, or even this year, but couldn't pass this up. A neighbor
parked this 83' 650 in his front yard this morning asking $600. I got it for
$450. All original, 19Kmiles.

It had been in storage over the winter with Sta-bil. Tank is clean & it started
right up.

Looks like one of the front calipers is sticking. Needs fork seals. Going to
need a front tire & battery. (Nothing I haven't done before)

The only issue it has is the charging system. I never paid attention to this
topic on the many threads over the years being a member because I never had the
problem.

For now I'll be busy doing lots of cleaning & inspecting. Is there a 650 manual
PDF file? I'll have to order another Clymer.

Where would be a good place to start regarding charging?
