Hello all! I'm working on getting my 550 running. I bought it with about 4500
miles on it and hasn't been started in a few years. I've found a lot of good
info on this forum and several other sites about bringing back improperly
stored motorcycles.
One website recommends to "spray penetrating oil around the valve stems (inside
the valve springs). This will soften up the rubber valve seals and enough will
penetrate past to enter the valve guides. Sticking valves hitting the piston
is one of the ways old engines are damaged when they run for the first time."
Two questions there:
I've only seen this recommendation on one website, can anyone second this? How
important or necessary is this specific the nighthawks?
And is there a way to do this without removing the head? If it has an easier
access I would certainly be more inclined to open it up and spray.

Any other "make sure you _______ before you " will be appreciated.

Thanks a lot
