Do like the rest of us and use your tripometer. It's a fancy gadget that 
costs money and breaks.

You have to get creative to not get nickeled and dimed on an old (or any) 
motorcycle. 
Spend your money on tires, gas, a dual horn, shocks, a wind shield, or a 
crash bar
