If his gun cleaner smells like licorice, it's probly Ballistol, which is a 
pretty popular product among shooting enthusiasts..  Though it's marketed 
as  a multi-purpose cleaner/lubricant, it's best use is as a lubricant and 
rust inhibitor.  Contains pharmaceutical grade mineral oil and isopropyl 
alchohol.

I use it regularly to clean my pistols and as chain lube in a pinch but 
never to clean carbs.  Since it coats metal surfaces with a thin layer of 
oil, seems it would attract dirt.
