No damage Paul but before it gets worse there's a product out there that 
removes dirt and grit from between the seal and the tube. It's just a thin 
piece of plastic that you insert in between the seal and the tube and sweep it 
all the way round. You can make them yourself although they are out there 
online called 'sealmate'  I've had pretty good success with lightly leaking 
seals. If you have old film negative, it works well. Just cut it to a hook on 
the end that will collect the dirt and pull it out as you sweep it round the 
fork tube, Graham
