I have been rear-ended twice, one pretty badly, the second a bit less to worry about. Both were (luckily) while driving a car. When on the motorcycle, I usually think about these incidents, but it also true that I am not 100% alert *all the time*. What to do? I think one really good technique is, when getting to a read light, if there is a car in front of you, split lanes and go to the front. This is technically illegal in most states, and I don't think every driver will like to see you moving to the front, but I believe it is the best technique we have to reduce the chances of getting badly hurt on a rear end collision.
While I do not actively apply this technique, I am seriously considering adopting it as a normal riding habit. What do you think?
